Scope and Content 

 

Series consists of ledgers and books detailing the accounts of officers and servants of the Hudson's Bay Company. The accounts of individuals include balances, interest and stock accounts, as well as goods ordered by servants. Many entries for individuals include details of service with the HBC, such as dates of appointment, desertion, retirement, or death, as well as place of origin or subsequent residence. The records concern officers and servants employed in the Southern, Northern, Montreal and Western Departments, servants in the settlement of Red River, discharged or deceased servants, and London employees. Volumes are indexed.

Custodial History 

 

The Archives Department of the Hudson's Bay Company was created in London in the 1920s. The Archives Department had custody of the records until they were transferred on deposit to the Archives of Manitoba in 1974, according to the 1973 Agreement between the HBC and the Province of Manitoba. In 1994, the HBC donated the records to the Province to be maintained permanently by the Archives of Manitoba.
