Scope and Content 

 

Series consists of annual lists of servants employed at Hudson's Bay Company posts. Volumes up to 1816 list servants according to the post where they served. The volume covering 1818 to 1819 lists servants according to Northern and Southern Departments. Records from 1821 to 1841 consist of miscellaneous loose lists of officers, clerks and servants.

Details provided for each servant in volumes up to 1819 include servant's name, capacity or position, annual wage, contract expiry date, parish of residence and age. Many entries also include comments on the servant's character.

Records are arranged chronologically.

Most original records have been withdrawn, and must be viewed on microfilm.

Custodial History 

 

The Archives Department of the Hudson's Bay Company was created in London in the 1920s. The Archives Department had custody of the records until they were transferred on deposit to the Archives of Manitoba in 1974, according to the 1973 Agreement between the HBC and the Province of Manitoba. In 1994, the HBC donated the records to the Province to be maintained permanently by the Archives of Manitoba.
