|
Item consists of a photocopy of a memoir by Robert W. Dodman. The memoir gives an outline of his childhood, his career with the Royal North West Mounted Police and his career with the Hudson's Bay Company. He describes his duties as a constable with the R.N.W.M.P., including patrolling Vancouver in the summer of 1919 when there was threat of a general strike; interviewing immigrants who applied for Canadian naturalization; and riding as an escort to an Indian Agent making his annual treaty payments. The memoir also gives an account of Dodman's career with the HBC, including a short term as an accountant at Peace River Crossing, Alberta; his trip from Peace River Crossing up the Mackenzie River to Fort Good Hope and his experiences as an HBC employee at Fort Good Hope, Arctic Red River, Fort Macpherson, Fort Rae and Hay River. There is also a note by one of Dodman's grandchildren concerning Dodman's spouse, Maria Vitrekwa, and their children. |
