Scope and Content

Series contains personnel records kept by the Fur Trade Department office in Winnipeg and later accumulated by the Personnel Division. The department office began to keep its own servants records in 1920, in effect creating records more or less parallel to those kept in the Accountant's Department. The Accountant's Department appears to have abandoned the practice of keeping departmental personnel records in around 1924.

Series contains staff records of service, providing names, dates and places of birth, marital status and number of children for employees as well as retirees, those who were dismissed and those who died prior to certain dates. The records of service also give summaries of careers, terms of contracts and, in some cases, notes about pensions and grants. These records show the progression in personnel forms during the 1920s and 1930s, and demonstrate the Fur Trade Department's attempts to create increasingly sophisticated and comprehensive personnel forms. Some memoranda are also included.

Custodial History

The Archives Department of the Hudson's Bay Company was created in London in the 1920s. The Archives Department had custody of the records until they were transferred on deposit to the Archives of Manitoba in 1974, according to the 1973 Agreement between the HBC and the Province of Manitoba. In 1994, the HBC donated the records to the Province to be maintained permanently by the Archives of Manitoba.
