Scope and Content 


Records document William Ivens's interests and his activities as a politician, chiropractor, and labour advocate in the years after the Winnipeg General Strike.

Records consist of correspondence, notes, speeches, articles and newspaper clippings. There are also subject files and speeches written by other people, including other CCF members of parliament. Correspondence and files include the subjects of the CCF, chiropractic medicine, One Big Union, workers' rights, elections, United College, socialism, and the labour movement. There are also letters written by family, friends, fellow chiroprators, politicians and general citizens.


Administrative History or Biographical Sketch 


William Ivens (1878-1957) was a Methodist minister, labor leader, politician, chiropractor and editor who was born in England and emigrated to Winnipeg in 1896.

Custodial History 


Following Ivens's death some of his books and papers were sent to United College. In 1959 Donovan Swailes, provincal secretary of the Manitoba Provincal Council of the CCF arranged for the records to be donated to the Archives of Manitoba.




Correspondence was arranged alphabetically by author and subject by the provincal archivist in 1959 when the records were first processed.
