Biographical Sketch or Administrative History |
The Hindu Society of Manitoba was founded in 1970 to preserve and promote Hindu culture, philosophy and religion in Manitoba. Dr. Atish Maniar was the founding president. The society's original aims were to have a common place for Hindus to worship and to build a Hindu temple in Winnipeg. In the 1970s, members met in each other's homes and in other temporary spaces. In the early 1980s, the society purchased a building on Ellice Avenue and converted it into a temple. In the 1990s, the society purchased a site on St. Anne's Road and planned to build a new temple. In 2005 the Hindu Temple and Dr. Raj Padey Hindu Centre was officially opened at 999 St. Anne's Road. The Hindu Society of Manitoba holds regular prayer meetings, lectures, classes and workshops for youth and adults. The society organizes an annual Diwali celebration as well as other festivals and events. The society also publishes the Hindu Darshan (or Darsan), a publication featuring articles and poetry written by community members. |
