Function |
Keewatin Community College was responsible for providing northern Manitobans with vocational and academic skills to meet changing social and economic conditions and to support individual educational development. |
Administrative History |
Keewatin Community College came into existence as the Northern Manitoba Vocational School in The Pas in the fall of 1966. When Manitoba's vocational schools became community colleges in 1969, the Northern Manitoba Vocational School was renamed Keewatin Community College. Although first located in The Pas, the College later established an additional campus in Thompson and regional centres in Cross Lake, Churchill, Flin Flon, and Swan River. Through satellite programs, the College also offered distance education and evening classes. Keewatin Community College offered over thirty diploma and certificate programs in the areas of applied science, technology, business, health, trades and vocational fields to meet the educational needs of Manitoba's northern residents, and to ensure that they were not at a disadvantage in responding to changing economic and social conditions both within and beyond northern Manitoba. Keewatin Community College was under the control of the Department of Education and Training and its predecessors until 1992, when each of Manitoba's community colleges was placed under the administration and control of its own board of governors. Although Keewatin Community College thereafter reported to a Board of Governors, after 1992 the College received its operational funding through grants administered by the Department's Access Programs section. In 2004, the functions of Keewatin Community College were incorporated into the newly created University College of the North. |
