Administrative History |
The Lac la Pluie District was established in 1822 as part of a larger effort to reorganize the fur trade regions after the HBC's amalgamation with the North West Company. The district was comprised of the areas around and north of Rainy Lake (Fort Frances). The HBC had established Fort Frances, first known as Lac la Pluie House, on Rainy Lake in 1793 to compete with the North West Company. The district was headquartered at Fort Frances from 1824-1843, 1844-1853 and 1878-1879. From 1843-1844 and from 1853-1876, the headquarters was located at Fort Alexander, and at Rat Portage in 1876-1878 and 1879-1891. In 1900, the Lac la Pluie District amalgamated with the Lake Superior District. The new district operated under the name Lake Superior District. |
