Under the Manitoba Gaols Act, the Attorney General was given the role of Superintendant of Gaols and was responsible for ensuring that administration of correctional institutes was in compliance with the Act. Legislation required that gaolers submit semi-annual returns listing the names of prisoners, the municipality in which the offences were committed and the offender contained, dates of offender admittance and discharge, and the amount due to the Province for the care and maintenance of each prisoner. |
Scope and Content |
Series consists of registers, or calendars, for various judicial districts within the Province of Manitoba. Records summarize the demographics of inmate populations including the names of the prisoners, municipalities where the offence was committed, date of admittance and discharge, nature of the offense, and the amount due to the Province for the care and maintenance of each prisoner. Series also includes prisoner committal ledgers, guard report books from Headingley Correctional Institution and the Portage Provincial Jail, and registers documenting return of prisoners committed, punishment, prisoner descriptions and statistics. 'A' series (records with a schedule number with the letter 'A' at the start of the alphanumeric code, e.g. A 0123) are artificial series created by the archives to organize and describe government records that did not come to the archives through the regular government records scheduling process. |
