Additional Context

The Planning and Priorities Committee of Cabinet was established in 1986 to recommend overall policy direction and priorities to Cabinet and to oversee the implementation of the government's priorities. It was preceded by the Social Resources Committee of Cabinet which was established informally in 1982 and by Order-in-Council in 1983 by Premier Howard Pawley. This committee was responsible for prioritizing the government's policies with regard to social concerns. It coordinated the activities of the departments with mandates in this area and was also given responsibility for reprioritizing expenditures in these departments. After the Decter Report on executive structure in 1986, the Social Resources Committee was dissolved to form the Planning and Priorities Committee of Cabinet. The new Planning and Priorities Committee of Cabinet combined the responsibilities of the former Social Resources Committee and the Economic Resources and Investment Committee. This new Committee, along with its Secretariat, was responsible for setting policy directions for the government and monitoring the implementation of priority policies.
